Mud, Trails and Corsets

Hiking in corsets?  Why not!  My underclothes and I braved muddy trails, strange looks and a steep hill or two to get a few outdoor photos at our local Regional Park.  I'm happy to report that my white American Duchess Astorias survived the less than perfect terrain and still look brand new, and my corset is still crazy comfy even when scrambling down a rocky hillside.

You can read about the making of the blue corset here, and how I made my corded petticoat here.  The drawers peeking from below the petti are my first attempt at reproducing these antique drawers; stay tuned later this week for the second, much improved repro and a pattern!

  4. I'm local to you and love your blog -- it's so informative though I don't sew Victorian much. This is a lovely underwear set, but I have to admit, I was expecting a pile of hair/pins/curls on top of your head and then TADA, unexpected crew cut. Hurrgh??? I'm taking that to mean you did a particularly convincing job. I don't think I usually expect the hair to be right.

    1. I'm glad you like the blog!
I got rid of the long hair and started buzzing it years ago because it's simply easier to deal with. I can always wear wigs when I need to, and my morning routine is down to 15 minutes rather than an hour :)

    2. Yeah, can't imagine doing the several hours of hairdo thing. Seems like it would be great about 5 or 6 times a year but a drag the rest of the time. It's so much easier to pack the wig off to the ....whatever you call the people that style wigs.... and go about your day. Do you have one wig you have redone all the time or several wigs, kept in several styles?

    3. I've got a couple of wigs in historical styles that I only change small details on, plus a bunch of small add ons (braids, buns, small wefts) to incorporate into my own hair when it's long enough. I've also got bundles of my own hair saved when I chopped it all off that I tend to put on a headband and wear under hats.

  6. I was wondering if you could tell me about the chemise you are wearing in this (and other) post(s)?! I love the line of it and would really like to make one like it.

    1. If I remember correctly, it's Truly Victorian's TV102 pattern. It's a useful all-around sort of chemise. The petticoat you see here is a separate item though, that's not the bottom of the chemise.
